If the cap on your head makes a stranger smile before they've decided whether to take you seriously, you're already winning.
When we started sketching the mark, we tried it in every colour you'd expect from a heritage brand — racing green, oxblood, navy on cream. All of them looked correct. None of them looked like us.
The problem with correct, we realised, is that it's already been done. Every other British heritage label has a crest in a dark, sensible colour, sitting on a chest pocket trying very hard not to offend anyone. We weren't trying to offend anyone either, we were trying to make people smile. This fun and humour of the brand should be at the centre of what we were trying to achieve.
Pink kept creeping back in. Not hot pink, not millennial pink — a specific, slightly dusty blush that reads as warm rather than sweet. It's the colour of a good rosé held up to the light, of the inside of a shell, of the sky over the Camel estuary about twenty minutes before sunset. We swatched it against ivory, against navy, against the inside of a denim jacket, and it kept holding its own without ever shouting.
What we liked, in the end, was that it disarmed people. A navy crest is a statement of seriousness. A pink Pig is a statement of confidence — the kind that doesn't need to raise its voice. You can wear it to a meeting, lecture or a beach barbecue and it means the same thing in each place.
There's also something honest about it. Pigs are pink. We didn't reach for a colour that signalled luxury or sport or heritage. We reached for the colour the animal actually is, and then we made it the best version of itself — a shade softer than the real thing, a shade warmer than the obvious one, and entirely unbothered by what anyone else is doing.
The first sample came back from the embroiderer on a denim blue vintage cap. We passed it round the table. Nobody said anything for a moment, which is usually how you know. Then somebody put it on, walked to the mirror, and started laughing. That was the moment.
We've had the occasional email since launch asking whether we'd ever do the Pig in another colour. We've thought about it. Probably not. The pink is the joke and the point and the whole thing. Change the colour and you're just selling another cap.
However we will be considering special drops and design your cap options in the future where the Pig will be in another colour. There may also be times where the pink pig is lost of pink items and we will get your feedback on what looks best.
